The Republic of Armenia occupies the northeastern part of the Armenian Highland with the Ararat Valley - the political, economic and cultural cradle of the Armenia people - at its heart. It is in this area that the old and new capitals - Armavir, Yervandashat, Artashat, Vagharshapat , Dvin and Yerevan - were built.

Armenia is a mountainous country. It occupies an area of about 29 800 km2 and constitutes 7.5% of the original land of the Armenian people. The highest point is mount Aragats (4090m.) The lowest point is the gorge of the River Debet - 380m. The average altitude is 1800m. Two thirds of the territory is useless for agriculture. The remaining one third is used thanks to incredible efforts and huge investment. It is often said that Armenians 'squeeze bread from stone.' It is a country with a homogeneous population of 3.2m, of which 3% are Russians, Greeks, Assyrians, Kurds, Yezidis, etc. The country is divided into 10 provinces or marzes. It has 27 cities, 31 towns and 921 villages. The capital is Yerevan.

Coat of Arms of Armenia

The RA flag with its three horizontal of red, blue and apricot, the coat of arms and the national anthem were inherited from the first Republic. The RA Constitution was adopted in a nationwide referendum on 5 July 1995 and amended in 2005. The State language is Armenian (a separate branch in the Indo-European family of language). In 1993, the Armenian dram (AMD) was introduced. The time in Armenia is 4 hours ahead of GMT.

Armenia is a full member of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS, 1991), the United Nations (UN, 1992), the Council of Europe (CoE, 2001) and the World Trade Organization (WTO, 2002).

The overall length of the border is 1422km. It borders Georgia in the north, Azerbaijan in the east, Nakhichevan and Iran in the south, and Turkey in the west.

Armenia is located at the same latitude as the Balkans, the Apennine and the Pyrenean peninsulas. During the year it receives as many sun rays as the countries situated in these peninsulas. However, the climate is different. The reason is the distance from the Atlantic Ocean. The Armenian climate is also influenced by its elevation (vertical zone), the surrounding mountains and the direction of winds.
