Geghard: the first cave church
Grotto monastery Geghard is situated at a distance of 9 kilometers from Garni. St. Geghard(XIIIc.) Monastic Complex is in Geghardadzor on the right bank of the River Azat.We know, that even at the beginning of IVth century there was a cloister named Ayrivank (arm. "cavy monastery") due to its location in natural and artificial caves.

The monstery was a large centre of religion, culture and monastic land ownership. Its position is poetic and its climate-healthy. The oldest monument is the rocky St. Astvatsatsin(Mother of God) Church (1177), which is situated outside the walls of the monastery.The main church, the narthex, the two cave churches, the burial chamber and the small cells were built in XIIIc.

Geghard is included in UNESCO Heritage list.
